Attacks On Shia Muslims in Karachi and Mianwali
The Shia Muslim community in Pakistan is under severe threat, facing targeted violence from extremist groups like Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), which, despite being officially banned, continues to operate openly. Recent attacks in Karachi and Mianwali highlight the escalating persecution. On August 25, 2024, in Karachi, ASWJ militants attacked a Shia religious procession, killing two individuals and injuring nine. The following day, in Mianwali, a similar attack during a Shia commemoration left two more dead and 30 injured. The media’s portrayal of these incidents as mere clashes between rival groups further obscures the reality of Shia persecution. The situation calls for urgent legal reforms, accurate media reporting, and stronger protection for religious minorities to address the root causes of sectarian violence and ensure the safety of the Shia community in Pakistan.
