Location : Hangu

Casualties :10

Narrative of the Event

On March 21, 1998, members of the radical Deobandi organization, the Supreme Sunni Council, opened fire on the Nauroz Procession in Hangu district, KPK, killing 10 Shi’a Muslims and injuring over 25. Conflicting reports suggest the death toll might be higher, with local sources claiming 25 fatalities. Despite this, news agencies initially reported 10 deaths on-site, and subsequent updates did not confirm additional casualties.

The involvement of PML-N MNA Ibrahim Paracha from Kohat in the brutal firing on Shi’a Muslims in Hangu was evident.

“PML MNA from Kohat, Javed Ibrahim Piracha , a leading member of the self–styled Supreme Sunni Council of the area, he was clearly the instigator of the anti–Nauroz strike call in Hangu. “March 21 will be the day of Jihad in Hangu, and if I survive, we will meet again”, Piracha told the editor of an Islamabad Urdu newspaper a day before the violence started.”
