The first ten days of August 1997 were very difficult for the Shia Muslims of Lahore. Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan’s death squad, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, has killed more than 16 Shi’a Muslims in a series of targeted killings.
In 1997, within the Lahore division of Punjab, Pakistan, 76 Shi’a Muslims fell victim to targeted violence orchestrated by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ), led by Riaz Basra. The distressing incidents were extensively covered by Newsline and Herald, two distinguished monthly magazines based in Karachi, shedding light on a total of 132 prominent Shi’a Muslims subjected to targeted killings across 8 divisions of Punjab that year.1,2
