Narrative of the Event

On March 10, 1995, a bomb blast struck Jama Masjid Darbar-i-Hussani Hussain Abad Malir, a Shi’a Mosque in Karachi. Following the explosion, two gunmen entered the mosque, targeting the Friday prayer gathering in the courtyard. The attack resulted in the tragic death of 13 individuals, including 5 Sunni Muslims and 8 Shi’a Muslims, with 22 others sustaining injuries.

According to the ‘Daily New York Times,’ this assault marked the third within two weeks on gatherings of Karachi’s Shiite Muslim minority, who had already suffered 20 casualties in attacks on Shiite mosques on February 25. The anguish of survivors and the bereaved was compounded by the fact that among the victims were young children, boys and girls as young as 5, who regularly gathered outside the mosque on Fridays to seek alms.
