On September 17, 1997, in Rawalpindi, adjacent to Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, five Iranian cadets and their Pakistani driver were slain. The cadets, en route to the Iranian cultural center in Islamabad, were stopped at ‘Choor Chowk’ by four masked gunmen who opened fire with AK-47 assault rifles. All five Iranian cadets lost their lives on the spot.
Lashkar-i-Jhangvi-LJ, the death squad of Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan-SSP, an anti-Shi’a Muslim radical organization, claimed responsibility in a letter sent to the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court by Riaz Basra, the head of Lashkar-i-Jhangvi.
