On Saturday, February 21, 1998, two Iranian construction workers on the Clifton flyover project in Karachi were fatally shot by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi terrorists, a death squad associated with the anti-Shia radical organization Sipah-e-Sahabah Pakistan (SSP). The incident took place near the chief minister’s house, the US consulate, and three five-star hotels. Notably, it coincided with the death anniversary of seven individuals, including the director of the Iranian Cultural Centre in Multan, who were killed exactly a year prior on February 21.
The victims, Murtaza Adeeb Zadey, 50, a foreman, and Ali Mohammad Habiby Zadey, 36, a storekeeper, resided in Clifton View apartments. They had arrived in Pakistan eight months earlier from Iraq Shehr in Iran and were employed by Masheen Sazi-i-Arak, an official Iranian construction company.
Eyewitnesses reported two unidentified individuals on a motorbike approaching the Clifton Bridge. After parking, they engaged in conversation with the victims at the flyover construction site, potentially confirming their identities. Following a brief chat, the assailants shot the workers multiple times, then swiftly fled towards Bath Island on their motorbike.
