A tragic sectarian incident occurred in Kalabagh, a town in the Mianwali District of Pakistan’s Punjab province, where at least two Shia men were killed and over 30 others injured. The violence erupted during a Chehlum procession, which commemorates the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. This procession was attacked by a mob led by armed members of the banned group Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ).
The deceased individuals were identified as Ali, son of Barkatullah, from Mari, and Daleel Abbas, son of Aqeel Abbas, from Kukranwala. The attack highlighted the ongoing sectarian tensions in Pakistan, particularly the targeting of Shia Muslims by extremist Sunni groups, such as ASWJ, which has a history of inciting violence against religious minorities.
