Narrative of the Event
On the evening of August 25, 2024, a violent attack occurred at the Hyderi Mosque and Imambargah in Ali Basti(colony) , Gulbahar (Old Golimar), Karachi. The assault was carried out by armed participants of a rally organized by the banned extremist group Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), a Takfiri militant faction within the Deobandi sect, notorious for its persecution and genocidal actions against Shia Muslims. During the attack, 25-year-old Shia mourner Junaid Mehdi and 18-year-old Sunni passerby Umair Sultan were fatally shot, dying at the scene. Additionally, nine other Shia mourners sustained injuries. The incident took place just one day before the processions commemorating the 40th day of the martyrs of Karbala, known as Arbaeen or Chehlum-e-Imam Hussain when armed participants of banned out-fits rally attacked over Imambargah Hyderi where Majlis Aza for Shia Muslim Women mourners was being held.
The Central General Secretary of Jafria Organization Pakistan, Allama Syed Athar Hussain Jaffari, stated in a press conference that participants of a rally organized by the banned Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat/Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan opened fire on Imambargah Haidery while a women’s mourning assembly (Majlis-e-Aza) was taking place inside. Outside, only a few young men were present, who ran towards the alley to save their lives but were targeted, resulting in one young man succumbing to his injuries on the spot. Allama Athar Hussain Jaffari further said that the officials of the Sindh government and police, under the pressure of the banned organization, distorted the facts and falsely portrayed the attack on the women’s mourning assembly in the Imambargah as an attack on the rally of the banned organization. He condemned this act as an attempt to portray the attackers as victims.
