Narrative of the Event

In early September 1996, unidentified individuals inscribed an anti-Shi’a slur on a classroom blackboard in a government high school in Parachinar, the capital of District Kurram in the Kohat division of KPK. The incident sparked protests among Shi’a Muslims in Parachinar. Upon the school’s reopening on September 8, unidentified assailants fired upon Shi’a students, reigniting protests across Parachinar. As the demonstrations persisted, militants from the Deobandi Tanzeem Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamat launched terrorist attacks in various areas of Parachinar, resulting in the tragic deaths of 200 Shi’a Muslims.
