On Monday, July 29, 2001, a senior official of the Ministry of Defense, Syed Zafar Hussain Zaidi, was ambushed by three unidentified motorcyclists near his Nazimabad residence in the morning. His driver, however, miraculously escaped unhurt.
According to the witnesses and the police, soon after the Director of Research Laboratories, Ministry of Defense, Syed Zafar Hussain Zaidi, 59, left his residence at 2H-11/9, Nazimabad No. 2, in his official car, a Suzuki Mehran (GP-3427), a motorcyclist intercepted it, forcing driver Safdar Hussain Shah to stop the car. As the car came to a halt some yards from his home, two armed men appeared and sprayed the rear seat with bullets. All three assailants then escaped on the motorcycle. He was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, but he died before receiving any medical aid.1,2,3
On July 29, 2001, the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the murders of PSO managing director Shaukat Mirza and defense ministry official Syed Zafar Hussain Zaidi. Chief Riaz Basra and divisional chief Lal Mohammed issued a joint statement owning up to both killings.4
