Narrative of the Event

On March 19, 2002, the custodian of one of the city’s main Imambarah Khaima-e-Sadats located at Syed Mouj Darya Road was murdered.

The motorcyclists, near the Vocational Training Institute for Women at the Jain Mandir Chowk, collided with a college-going girl, witnesses said. As a result of the collision, an eyewitness said the motorcycle, its riders, and the girl all fell on the road. “An old man, seeing the collision while standing in front of Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat, rushed to help the girl; the two desperadoes, trying to escape, shot at him and injured him as soon as he reached near them, an eyewitness said.

The victim was identified as 55-year-old Syed Hassan Raza, custodian (Mutawali) of Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat. Hasan had actually rushed to pick her daughter up and check on the persons riding the bike, but the killers took him for a threat and shot him dead,” a local shopkeeper said. Later, the desperate killers abandoned their motorcycle along with a mauser, held a nearby motorcycle-rickshaw driver at gunpoint, and escaped, added the witnesses.

Father of six, with three daughters among them, Syed Hasan Raza was reported to be a retired AG Office official. Being the custodian of Khaima-e-Sadat, he was supposed to deal with all the affairs relating to the present Ashura at his Imambargah.
