Media and Civil society Discourse on Shi’a Muslim genocide in Afghanistan – SMG Report

On Friday August 5, 2022, a handcart exploded in Kabul, killed 8 civilians in an area largely inhibited by Afghanistan’s minority Shi’a Muslim community.

Actually, two explosions happened, when Afghan Shi’a Muslims were returning their home after attending the commemoration meetings of mourning of Imam Hussain from two Mosques in Western Kabul. Majority in them were Shi’a women and children.

ISIS Afghanistan accepted the responsibility of the said terrorist act against the Afghanistan’s minority Shi’a Muslim community.

Urdu electronic Media in Pakistan totally blacked out the incident of terrorism against Afghan Shi’a community on the eve of Ashura. Few Urdu National dailies in Pakistan published the news but didn’t mention the religious identity of the victims of the explosions.

Daily Dawn although published the news while mentioning the religious identity of the victims of the bomb explosions in Western Kabul, but the newspaper didn’t bring the incident under discussion in its editorial, but whenever any terrorist attack happened against the Palestine’s people, we see not only full coverage of the act but exclusive editorial on the said incident. Daily Dawn published exclusive editorial on the aggression of Israeli forces against the Palestinian People in Gaza and complained of defacing and burying the tragic incident under newspeak.

IT is a sad commentary on the politics of the Middle East that even its most tragic human stories get defaced and buried under newspeak.

In Urdu print dailies, in TV chandelles we saw vast coverage. Government, Opposition, civil society segments of Civil Society condemned the aggression of Israel against Palestinian People severely.

But such anger, anxiety, anxiousness, feeling of pain, sympathy was not seen in the case of Afghan Shi’a Genocide by ISIS Afghanistan. Not a single National daily including daily Dawn dared to write an exclusive editorial on marginalization of Shi’a Muslim community in Afghanistan.

Not a single national political leader issued his/her statement to show solidarity with Afghan shi’a community as we have seen in the case of attack on Gaza by the Israel.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan made two tweets in English and one tweet in Urdu while giving response over Israeli Aggression against Palestinians in Gaza but not a single tweet he made against ISIS’ genocidal campaign against Shi’a Muslim community in Afghanistan. Same thing we saw from Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Shahbaz Sharif. PPP’s leadership didn’t released its official response over the said terrorist act.

On Social Media aggression of Israel on the Palestinian People got more attention than genocidal aggression on Afghan Shi’a Muslim community by ISIS.
