Fanatic armed and violent mob ransacked and burned-down the 5 churches, attacked the residences of members of Christian community and the office of local Assistant commissioner -AC following an alleged incident of desecration of the Holy Quran in Jarawanwala, a subdivision of the District Toba Tek Singh in Faisalabad division of Punjab.
Both “desecration” and “blasphemy” have been used as justifications in Pakistan for the persecution of religious minorities. Religious minorities such as Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs are targeted for persecution due to claims of blasphemy and desecration, but so are subsects of Islam such as Shi’a Muslims and Sufi Muslims.

A sectarian and persecutory bill was recently passed by both houses of parliament. It amends section 298-A of the Pakistani penal code and proposes harsher and stricter punishment for those accused of allegedly disrespecting the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s wives, and the Holy Prophet Muhammad’s family. General Ziaulhaq, the dictator, inserted Provision 298-A to the PPC through an order in 1980. The legal persecution of Shi’a Muslims in Pakistan for practicing their beliefs has been made possible by that addition.

The SMG team vehemently condemns what transpired to the Christian community in Jaranwala. Team demonstrates its solidarity for Pakistan’s Christians as a whole. We provide the community with all of our support.
We demand that the Punjabi government in Pakistan detain all of the perpetrators of the tragedy. The US State Department and White House should be made aware of it and utilize their influence over the GOP to not only root out the core causes of mob violence against all religious minority groups. But undo all the changes that the autocrat Ziaul Haq made to the Pakistani constitution under the guise of “Anti-Blasphemy Laws.”
